The Northeast Florida Chapter of the Mizzou Alumni Association has a long history of support of the Association and the University.  Originally formed in the late 1990’s under the direction of Richard and Donna Morehead, the Chapter remained stable until the early 2000’s.  A chance meeting between two neighbors in the Julington Creek Plantation rekindled the Chapter.  Under the leadership of Past President, Tom Leicht, the Chapter was awarded the MAA’s Capstone Award, the Association’s highest achievement honor in 2002.

With the momentous announcement on November 6, 2011 that the University of Missouri was joining the Southeast Conference, the Northeast Florida Chapter moved from the ‘edge of the wilderness’ to ‘smack dab in the hornets’ nest.”  In the fall of 2014, the Missouri Tigers football team will face another showdown in ‘The Swamp” on October 18th.  The countdown has begun.

The Northeast Florida Chapter covers the geographic boundaries of Amelia Island to the north, Gainesville to the west and Palm Coast to the south.  More than 450 Mizzou alums live and work in Northeast Florida.  Over the past decade, Chapter has held a variety of events including:

  • Joint Watch Parties with SEC schools.
  • Participated in multiple College Nights representing the University’s Admission Office,
  • Was a principal sponsor of the Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure”.
  • Held Membership Drives
  • Mizzou Night with the Jacksonville Suns
  • Low Country Boil

The Northeast Florida Chapter recognizes that with visibility, comes responsibility.  A number of Northeast Florida alums have now stepped forward to support the Chapter’s Executive Committee.  In September, 2014, the Northeast Florida Chapter was awarded the distinction as a Columns Chapter by the Mizzou Alumni Association.  The Chapter is now eligible to award a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving local student who attends the University of Missouri. The Chapter is seeking to become a viable participant in various local SEC Conference alumni activities.
